Your first impression was correct....it is the fruit of the Jack-in-the-Pulpit. When they are mature they become dark red; I caught this one early.

Oops, sorry, should have told you I found a blossom pic of someone else at once by just hitting your latin tag, (Sooo happy there are a few folks here that start to include binominals for easy cross-refering! ) and that I am very taken with those cool stripes it got!

Superb shot of the fruits. We don't have the flwoers out here, but we used to see them on the east coast. I think there's a photo of the flowers in my photostream somewhere.
