Cologne - Weisshaus

Cologne - Weisshaus
Cologne is the fourth-largest city in Germany - and one of the oldest. A Germanic tribe, the Ubii, had a settlement here, this was named by the Romans "Oppidum Ubiorum". In 50 AD, the Romans founded "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium", the city then became the provincial capital of "Germania Inferior".

The Via Agrippa left Colonia in Roman times southwest. Today it is named Luxemburger Strasse and along this street about 1600 Roman tombs were found so far, as the Romans had a necropolis flanking the Via Agrippa. Bordering to the Luxemburger Strasse is a private park with a water castle in its center, named "Weisshaus". It was erected on old foundations as a summer residence for the abbots of the St. Pantaleon abbey during the Baroque times.

When Napoleon´s troops were in Cologne, the property of the abbey was confiscated. The chateau became state owned and was sold. Since then this is private property. It was destroyed in WWII but got completey rebuilt after the war. It is still privately owned, but I learned, that it "on the market" for about 6.000.000 Euros.
