Lesser Hairy Spotted Orchid

Lesser Hairy Spotted Orchid
This shot was taken at West Dean Gardens, nr Chichester, West Sussex. The real name of this Orchid is Kohleria Jester. In this picture the flower looks quite big. Actually the flower part is no more than an inch long. It is in the orchid greenhouse and is my favourite one there. I took a shot of one last year but was never 100% happy with it because one of the petals wasn’t in focus.

The image is formed from a Stack of 31 images all at slightly different focus and stacked in Photoshop. Although Photoshop can align images to be used for focus stacking it helps if the flower does not blow about too much so being in a greenhouse is ideal.

The colours were as taken and the edits were mainly to blur parts of the background more using Photoshop Lens blur plus a mask to exclude the flower. I brightened the centre a little using levels with a mask to exclude the edges keeping them a little darker. A little sharpening was applied with Topaz Clarity and again a mask was used to exclude the background.

The camera used was a Sony A550 with a Sigma 28-80 zoom with a macro function at 80mm. Taken on a Tripod.
