Millennium Bridge London at Night

Millennium Bridge London at Night
The Shot

This shot was taken on my latest day trip to London last Saturday 19 November. The shot is much taken but I wanted my own take. This pedestrian bridge could have been designed for Photographers as it lines up exactly with a great view of St Paul’s Cathedral. This view was taken from the South Bank of the Thames by the Tate Modern.

The picture was taken with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 20mm. Taken on a tripod. 3 raw images 2EV spacing. The 3 images were at 1 second, 4 seconds and 15 seconds. Opened in Photoshop first and each image noise reduced with Noiseware Pro and saved as tiffs

Photomatix

Outputted in Photomatix to detail enhancer. Click the Camera name top right for Exif details and the settings used.

Photoshop

General adjustments in levels and curves to enhance.

The spotlights on St Paul’s showed in the sky and I used a second levels layer with a mask to brighten and enhance just these.

Vibrance layer increase 49 points

Saturation adjustment layer slight decrease in the yellows and slight increase in the reds for the lights.

The -2EV image was copied in as a new layer, excluded with a mask and a brush used to bring it up just over St Paul’s to reduce the highlights from the lights.

Noiseware Pro

Unsharp Mask a little sharpening low radius and higher amount.

Duplicate layer with mask to apply Unsharp mask for extra sharpening and contrast (clarity effect) with low amount and high radius to most of the image save some highlights and a few areas in the sky and water. The settings were amount and radius both about 70 and threshold zero.
