DLR Train to Canary Wharf

DLR Train to Canary Wharf
The Shot

This is a shot from the archives from last year which I have meant to process for a while. There is a similar shot taken another day on my Photostream but without a train. This time I struck lucky and got a train going the other way

The view was taken on the Docklands Light Railway as the train left Heron Quays Station in the Canary Wharf East London Financial District. The railway is automatic, no driver. This gives a great opportunity as there are passenger seats at the front and back of the train. I put the camera lens flat against the window to cut out reflections.

The picture was taken with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20 wide angle zoom at 10mm. Taken handheld. 1 Raw image was used to create a false HDR by editing the exposure setting to create 3 images -2EV 0EV and +2EV for HDR and saved as tiffs.

Photomatix

Outputted in Photomatix to detail enhancer. Click the Camera name top right for Exif details and the settings used.

Photoshop

The lens correction tool was used to straighten verticals and then cropped

My own settings to suit to bring detail back using Topaz adjust using a layer. A layer mask was used to bring down the effect in some areas.

General adjustments in levels and curves to enhance. Layer masks used to exclude highlight areas

Brightness layer with mask used to substantially increase brightness in some parts of the train came out too dark

The shutter speed was too fast for in camera blurring so I created this using Topaz, Lens Effects Zoom. The same can be done in Photoshop but Topaz is much more exact and easy in setting the zoom centre. Using a mask on the layer the effect was applied only to the train and the tracks.

Noiseware Pro

Unsharp Mask a little sharpening low radius and higher amount.

Second duplicate layer for clarity effect using Unsharp mask with settings of amount 51 and radius 51 using a layer mask to exclude highlights.
