Mercian Bicycle Shiny Look

Mercian Bicycle Shiny Look
During my stay in Lanzarote I did a lot of rides on my Mercian custom built Touring bicycle. I combine this with Photography by having the Camera in a small backpack and the tripod strapped to a rack. This picture was taken outside Yaiza Church. Caution to prospective Mercian Bike buyers. The colours are enhanced so not genuine.

Looking at HDR photos I had come across a number of good looking ones where the colours and shine of a car have been substantially enhanced to produce some great shots. I thought why not do the same for a bike. The big problem was that selecting a bike is a lot more fiddly and time consuming than a car.

I had a good start as I choose bright colours when the frame was built and choose shiny polishable parts rather than the current fashion for black.

The Shot

Taken on a tripod with a Sony A550 with Sigma 10-20 zoom at 10mm
3 raw files at -2EV 0EV and +2EV
Opened in Photoshop Camera Raw. Noise reduced in Photoshop with Noiseware Pro Plugin for each picture and saved as Tiffs.

Photomatrix

The 3 tiffs were processed with Photomatix and outputted to detail enhancer mode and double processed. Process file not saved and processed again with different settings and lighter the 2nd time.

Photoshop

3 selections with quick selection tool, frame front wheel and back wheel. Each Selection copied. New curves adjustment layer and paste selection to it. Same process each layer. Adjustments with curves to obtain shiny colours and wheels

Selection was delicate with adding and subtracting as needed. Only rims and tyres of wheels selected not spokes.

Copy of original image selected and copied as layer. Mask used to tidy up selection. Original opacity changed and move tool used to align.

Layers were merged and more tidy up with clone stamp
