Pannage
At this time of year, it is traditional in the New Forest for pigs to be let loose into the Forest for about two months. They eat up the fallen acorns, beechmast, chestnuts etc, which can be harmful to the ponies. They have two or three rings in their snouts to prevent them digging too deep and damaging the forest floor

You have to drive carefully there;-) I'm sure being let loose is good for the pigs and the forest:-)

What a very sensible arrangement and a lovely sight. Much better than factory farming. An estate here used their pigs to root out rogue rhodedendrons very successfully.
