Pannage

Pannage
At this time of year, it is traditional in the New Forest for pigs to be let loose into the Forest for about two months. They eat up the fallen acorns, beechmast, chestnuts etc, which can be harmful to the ponies. They have two or three rings in their snouts to prevent them digging too deep and damaging the forest floor

Wiltrud Ludt, Jean, autofantasia, Fred Fouarge and 34 other people have particularly liked this photo

Wonderful shot Judith, I bet the pigs love this time of year and take a bit of rounding up when it's time to leave.
HFF and a lovely weekend to you.

I love this, Judith. We have often seen sheep and cows on the road both here and in Norway, but never pigs, HFF and drive carefully. ;-)

P.S. We could do with the pigs here to scoop up the thousands of acorns on the pavements and roads in our village,

Funny! They must have a system for rounding them up again 'cause I'm not sure pigs are all that cooperative to herding.

Judith Jannetta has replied to Juleann
I wondered that too, Juleann. But the New Forest has all kinds of livestock roaming about; we've seen ponies, cattle, donkeys, geese and pigs (also possibly ducks and sheep), so I guess they have perfected the art of rounding up stuff when they need to

Haha, it looks like these pigs are on the wrong side of the fence! But it sounds like they are performing a very useful sevice.

Terrific shot, although I did read recently about an attack by a 'gang' of pigs here on a walker!

I really like this one Judith.................such a delightful sight. I've heard of this tradition before, but I've never seen the pigs roaming around. Fascinating info about the rings......who would have guessed why?

HFF to you and have a piggin' good weekend.

PS: View large, on black - it looks marvellous..!!

Wonderful capture Judith. Never saw or heard of them, I only knew the ponies. Untill now. It a good idea to leave them clear the area a bit.

What a very sensible arrangement and a lovely sight. Much better than factory farming. An estate here used their pigs to root out rogue rhodedendrons very successfully.

Judith Jannetta has replied to Jean
Lovely method of getting rid of rhododendrons.....a pleasure for all parties. Just needs a bit of creative thinking
