Once again

Once again
A quick sketch I made at last Thursday's life drawing session. The model, Sonja asked for the sketch but I took this picture of it before giving it to her.

Alaska willow charcoal on 14 by 18 inch sketch paper.

Amelia, Lebojo, Steve Bucknell have particularly liked this photo

I love the way you have captured the curves by just using light and shadow. I've tried, and failed, at life drawing.

Thanks Amelia.

Charcoal lends itself well to such captures; learning both to see the light and shadow as well as replicating it on paper.

Depending on the situation (length of pose, complexity of fore-shorting, etc.) I lay a quick line defining the major curves and angles and then build around that. Other times, if the pose is long enough, I first lay down the shadows, blending them to the shape and density I want and then building the form around them.
