The fireman of H class 0.4.4T 31544 hands over the single-line token on a Tunbridge Wells to East Grinstead working on 3 August 1963. The signalman with his fag and paper looks happy with his lot!

Although the line closed in 1967, 31544 was already on borrowed time, seeing withdrawal during the following month.

Scanned from a 35mm size negative in my collection, photographer unknown.

Isisbridge, Smiley Derleth, Frank Roolooth have particularly liked this photo

It wasn't all the neatly uniformed staff that you find on many preserved lines. A friend of Dad's was signalman in Highbridge East 'B' and I spent some time with him in his little box on the Burnham side of the crossing over the GWR line. He was very much a shirt sleeves & braces man, using a tea towel to hand signal small shunting movements! Thanks for the memory!
