Norman Gate

Norman Gate
The Norman Gate was built to secure the west entrance to the Upper Ward.

Windsor Castle was originally built in the 11th century after the Norman Conquest when William the Conqueror landed in England and became King William I. The Castle Keep (Round Tower) was originally built of wood in 1080, but re-built in stone by Henry II in 1170. Over the centuries, successive monarchs made alterations, demolished and re-built walls and structures, right up to the 19th century when the current State Apartments were constructed. Windsor Castle has been used by the reigning monarch since the 11th century and is the longest-occupied palace in Europe.

Today's main agenda is to visit Windsor Castle. It was the first visit for both Michiel and myself. In the series you can see how the weather turned from sunny blue skies to gloomy downpour during the day. We would have loved to see more of the town of Windsor itself, such as the famous Eton College, but the heavy rain deterred us, I'm afraid. So I hope to return to Windsor again in the future.
