Fortnum & Mason

Fortnum & Mason
181 Piccadilly, St. James's, London W1

Fortnum & Mason has been selling fine things and food since 1707, at a site actually not far from this flagship location at 181 Piccadilly.

Founder William Fortnum was a footman in service to Queen Anne. One of his duties was to place new candles in the numerous candelabras around the palace every night. Being a shrewd man, he took the half-burnt royal candles and sold them at a profit (candles were extremely expensive in those days). When Mr. Fortnum retired from service, he and co-founder Hugh Mason together started a grocery store in 1707, which grew to become one of the world's best known upmarket department and food stores.
