Horse Thief Canyon

Horse Thief Canyon
I'd like to thank once again our wonderful friends Ben and Larry, who very kindly took the time to show us Alberta's unique landscapes and unusual scenery. We certainly could not have visited these places on public transit!

The man walking down the slope on the left gives perspective on the size of this Red Deer River Valley badlands.

Horse Thief Canyon earned its name during the early settler years when ranching was the main economic activity. Thousands of horses ranged from here to beyond the "Hand Hills" to the east. Legend has it that many horses would disappear into these canyons of the Red River Valley, later to re-appear carrying a different brand.

Some of the most significant fossil discoveries ever made from the Age of Reptiles have been discovered in this area of badlands, part of which would become the Dinosaur Provincial Park. Fossils of some 35 species of dinosaurs have been found here and are displayed in the nearby Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller.

Peggy C, Keith Burton, Tractacus, John FitzGerald have particularly liked this photo
