Home-made and self-designed self-irrigating system!

Home-made and self-designed self-irrigating system!
Years ago, my dad found several large glass jars on the street and took them home. They laid unused for years.

But I recently found a use for them -- my self-irrigating system while we were away on vacation.

I fill the glass jar with water, then cut out a very wide strip of cloth from an old cotton shirt to draw the water from the jar to the soil. The cotton is secured to the jar using a fold-back clip (the office type) and to the soil using a screw-driver or any long sharp pin. The idea is to prevent wind from blowing the cloth away from the glass jar or from where the tomato plant's roots are.

I prefer to use a glass jar over plastic, as I detest using plastic for water storage.

The lid prevents excessive water evaporation during the hot sunny summer, and also prevents mosquitoes from laying eggs in still water.

I'm happy to report that the self-irrigating system works! We came back from Calgary to find our tomato plants well-watered and healthy!

This could be adapted for indoors, too. Great idea.
