Honest Ed's

Honest Ed's
The historic discount department store Honest Ed's will be closing soon. For many years, new immigrants came here to buy cheaply-made stuff for very cheap prices. But those were the days before Wal-Mart, Costco and Canadian Tire. Slowly, people stop shopping here. Meanwhile, the downtown site right next to a metro/ subway station is prime location for re-development.

As I mentioned on Flickr, I remember Honest Ed's when it was garish.

As I didn't mention on Flickr I was on the same flight to London as Ed Mirvish in 1989; we were both in coach.

My favourite sight ever at Honest Ed's was a group of Chinese men in Mao jackets being guided past the display of illuminated Last Suppers. Their eyes were like saucers -- I imagine they thought they were witnessing the true decadence of the West at firsthand.

Wow, on the same flight as Ed Mirvish himself and he flew cattle-class?? I'm shocked!

Well, if those Chinese men were in Toronto before the 1980s, I guess even a low-end shop like Honest Ed's would be very impressive to them!
