The most profitable markets of Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo used the newer DC-10 airliner, whereas the less important markets of Manila, Peiking (Beijing) and Shanghai used the older DC-8.

Back in the 1970s, nonstop trans-continental flights were reserved for the most premium market such as Geneva to New York. Today, one would fly nonstop Tokyo to Zurich, but flight SR311 back in 1976, already branded as the express service, still involved two stops: Tokyo - Hong Kong - Bombay - Zurich.
