Winkel: Huismuis

Winkel: Huismuis
A kitchen ware shop called Huismuis. I mentioned that English and Dutch are very closely-related languages.

Very obviously, huis = house, and muis = mouse.

But when in plural, add the suffix -en, but the 's' becomes the 'z.'

So there is a 'muis' in a 'huis', but 2 or more 'muizen' in a row of 'huizen.'

And then we have the word "huismus" (house-sparrow), someone who likes to stay at home. I think this a word-joke on the huismus term.

Ha, Michiel told me the same thing about huismus on my flickr account. I think you're right about the Dutch wordplay between huismus and huismuis... about someone who likes to stay in the kitchen, like a mouse looking for food : P
