A Monarch resting on a leaf

A Monarch resting on a leaf
The Monarch butterfly is a migratory butterfly that migrates between Southern Canada and Mexico. Yep, they migrate a distance of over 3,000 miles (up to 5,000 kms). As the lifespan of each Monarch butterfly is not long enough to complete a migration cycle (from Mexico to Canada/ the U.S. and back to Mexico), it actually takes the Monarch butterfly four generations to complete each migration cycle.

How each new generation of Monarch butterfly knows the route, and knows whether they are supposed to fly south or north to finish their parents', and grandparents', and great grandparents' incomplete migration cycle is simply a mystery to us humans.

Hope the link works... watch this amazing documentary on the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly.

Oh yes, and they are always amazing to see. Our local park has a 'Monarch way station' that is planted with milkweed...their favorite for laying eggs :-)
