Bradford & Bingley Building Society

Bradford & Bingley Building Society
A big special thank-you to my Irish friend Neill, whom I met in May 2013 during my trip to Ireland, for sending me these banking ephemera. As the saying goes, someone's junk is another's treasure!

The abbreviation BS in Britain and Ireland means "Building Society," which is a form of mutual bank (banking co-op) owned collectively by the bank's member-clients, and with the mandate of focusing on providing residential mortgage loans.

BS in North American English of course, means bull-shit, or nonsense.

Bradford and Bingley Building Society was demutalised in the 1990s and became known as Bradford & Bingley plc. In 2008, during the global financial crisis, Bradford & Bingley became insolvent and was taken over by Spanish bank Banco Santander.
