Nieuw-Amsterdam's Wall

Nieuw-Amsterdam's Wall
It reads:

1653 - 1669 Wall Street Palisade
Wall Street is named For a Defensive
Wall of Logs [i.e. wood logs] Known as a Palisade
Erected in 1653 Along the Northern Border of New Amsterdam

The very southern part of Lower Manhattan used to be a Dutch settlement and trading port, known as Nieuw-Amsterdam (New Amsterdam in English) between 1609 and 1665. It was renamed New York in 1665 in honor of the then Duke of York (later James II of England) after English forces seized control of Manhattan Island, along with the rest of the Dutch colony.
