The Politics of the Emirates A380

The Politics of the Emirates A380
When Emirates announced an upgrade of the thrice-weekly Dubai-Toronto-Dubai routing to an Airbus A380 from the Boeing 777, it was a bit of a surprise to planespotters around the world. In particular, planespotters in New York, Newark, Washington D.C. and Chicago were understandably upset and jealous that we in Toronto got an Airbus A380 service before the big East Coast cities of the United States.

In reality, Emirates' upgrade from the Boeing 777 to Airbus A380 on the Toronto routes has a political reason. It turned out that Emirates is only allowed to fly to Toronto 3x weekly. The Dubai, United Arab Emirates-based airline wanted to increase its frequency to a daily service but was opposed by both the Canadian government and Air Canada. In order to circumvent the 3x weekly limit and yet increase its capacity, Emirates switched the flight to a much bigger plane, essentially raising its weekly capacity by 30% or so.
