The 1987 Kings Cross Fire: I Remember

The 1987 Kings Cross Fire: I Remember
Even though my hotel is just a couple of minutes from Kings Cross Station, it was towards the end of my trip that I remembered to take a photo of the station that has taken me to York, as well as all around London.

2007 marked the 20th anniversary of the Kings Cross Underground Fire of 1987-11-18. I was in Hong Kong at the time and was 16 year-old but I remembered hearing and reading much about the fire, which started when a discarded cigarette ignited the oil or grease in a wooden escalator. The fire spread quickly underground, trapping many riders in the busy station. The immense heat and toxic smoke killed 31 people (including courageous London Fire Brigade station office Colin J. Townsley), and injuring at least 60 more.

Strangely, just weeks before my departure from Toronto, I saw a programme on PBS about the fire as a tribute to the anniversary. Because of this tragic fire, underground (subway/ metro) safety and firefighter's equipment around the world were vastly improved and updated.

Taking this photo and pausing here is my way of paying respect to the deceased, particularly London Fire Brigade officer Colin J. Townsley.

Later in my trip, I visited the London Fire Brigade Museum and learnt a whole lot more about the history of fire fighting. Stay tuned.
