Standard & Chartered

Standard & Chartered
Standard Chartered Bank is one of those historic European colonial banks with a very storied history. The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China was founded by Royal Charter in 1853. In 1862, the Standard Bank of British South Africa was founded. Chartered Bank operates mostly in India, Middle East and the Far East. The Standard Bank operates in Africa. The two banks merged in 1969 to form Standard Chartered. One of the most international banks from Britain, ironically it hardly has any operations in Britain itself.

This photo shows Standard Chartered's head office at No. 1 Aldermanbury Square in London. Expecting to see a historic building, I was a little disappointed that it's a non-descript, unimpressive low-rise building. Their Hong Kong head office is a much more distinctive skyscraper.
