Back When a Hat Company Could Afford This

Back When a Hat Company Could Afford This
452 Fifth Avenue, Midtown Manhattan.

Completed in 1902 as the Knox Hat Company building (architect John H. Duncan.). In 1964, Republic National Bank (Republic New York Corp.) bought the building. In the 1980s, Republic National integrated it with a glass-walled skyscraper in the site behind it.

In 1999, British-Hong Kong banking behemoth HSBC's USA unit Marine Mildland Bank bought Republic National for USD $9.9-billion. This site is now HSBC USA's head office.

Under the glass skyscraper is HSBC's main gold vault in America, where billion dollars worth of gold is stored for its clients.
