Amsterdam Avenue, Nieuw-Amsterdam, er, that's New York

Amsterdam Avenue, Nieuw-Amsterdam, er, that's New York
Amsterdam Avenue at West 96th Street.

In 1609, English explorer Henry Hudson sailed up a river in east-cost America on behalf of the Dutch East India Company. In 1614, Nieuw-Nederland was officially founded by the Dutch in present-day New York state. The first permanent settlement was founded at the southern tip of Nieuw-Nederland in 1625 and was namded Nieuw-Amsterdam. Beginning in 1664, Nieuw-Nederland passed between Dutch and English control until the English gained full control in 1674, and Nieuw-Amsterdam was renamed New York.

Amsterdam Avenue is really 10th Avenue. All numbered avenues in West Side of NYC change name north of 59th Street.

Eighth (8th) Avenue becomes Central Park West.
Ninth (9th) Avenue becomes Columbus Avenue.
Tenth (10th) Avenue becomes Amsterdam Avenue.
Eleventh (11th) Avenue becomes West End Avenue.
