Brownstones

Brownstones
The Brownstone houses, or the brownstones, have become a quintessential symbol of New York City.

Built of brown, rusty sandstone in the 19th century, millions around the world associate such houses with New York from watching TV and movies about the city. The material was chosen because it's cheap. Brownstones feature high stoops, elegant cornices and large plate-glass windows.

Brownstones can be found in Upper West Side and Upper East Side (areas west and east of Central Park), Harlem, Greenwich Village, Gramercy Park, and parts of Brooklyn.
