The old Hong Kong railway was initially known as the Kowloon-Canton Railway British Section. Interesting in two aspects: First, when the railway line between Hong Kong and Canton (Guangzhou) was completed in 1910, Imperial China was in deep turmoil and as a matter of fact, in just one year, Imperial China was overthrown and China became a Republic. Probably to emphasize the fact that this part of the railway was in British Hong Kong, the name term "British Section" was added to the Kowloon-Canton Railway.

To me at least, the other interesting fact of the name was the choice of "Kowloon-Canton Railway," rather than Hongkong-Canton Railway.
