Obviously the name was too long for practical use, and the shortened form Société Générale was adopted.

In the financial world, it's often nicknamed as "SocGen".

In the 20th century, Société Générale developed into one of the biggest banks in the world. This is SG Hambros Bank Ltd.'s offices in London.
