Harbourside

I go to the water
distracted by joy,
past the old boatyard.
The white bobbing buoy

is dancing in sunlight,
and silver the sea,
and something you said
is setting me free.

The cormorant, egret
stand half-asleep;
fishes arise
where the water is deep,

and pelicans gather,
a flotsam afloat,
all in a clamour
close by the boat,

hope in their hearts,
and dreams of bright fish -
my hand in the water
making this wish:

the white egret flies,
the joys overspill;
I wish you could see it -
I hope that you will.

Song lyric by Giles Watson, 2014.
