9. The Sky and its Image
for Sacha Fawkes

The sky and sea have formed one glaze
of mirror-greys, with one straight shard
of sunlight. It has been this way for days.

The shard never shifts; the other sun,
unrisen, waits in abeyance. The bird-things
are silent. I too wait. It’s the long moment

of creation: nothing ripples; worlds stand
still. There’s sky and its image – nothing
else. The image drowns as the sky swells.
