From Hengistbury Head, Dorset. A nature reserve and site of special interest, the Head has been 'settled' since Neolithic times, part of the spit that creates Christchurch Harbour. It's name comes from Hengist, whose name, like his co-partner in early English history, Horsa, means 'Horse', though I don't think he in fact had anything to do with the place. I caught the heather in full flower earlier this year, and what you cannot appreciate from this photo is that it was practically impossible to handhold this shot in the hideous gale that was blowing full into my face.
