Lych Gate to St. Mary Magdalene Church, Barkway

Lych Gate to St. Mary Magdalene Church, Barkway
I can just imagine the ladies in their long skirts walking through this gate to church in past centuries.

The word lych survived into modern English from the Old English or Saxon word for corpse ~ Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lychgate

"They are not long, the weeping and the laughter,
Love and desire and hate:
I think they have no portion in us after
We pass the gate.
They are not long, the days of wine and roses:
Out of a misty dream
Our path emerges for a while, then closes
Within a dream."
