Wood, brick, flint

Wood, brick, flint
St. Andrew's Church, Greensted, Essex, which is the oldest wooden church in the world.

The brick built chancel with its flint footings dates from Henry VII's reign in the 1500s, but the original chancel was smaller and was built of timber.

The nave is made of large split oak tree trunks, which was a traditional Saxon form of construction. All the different materials used in the church's construction give it great character.
