Ruffed Grouse

Ruffed Grouse
Went ice fishing today and seen 12 of these Ruffed Grouse on the way home. This one posed the best out of about 8 birds I took photos of.

Colette Moskalyk, Cats 99, Diana (Naturegrl64) have particularly liked this photo

Oh, this is good. Good light, too. I haven't seen any of these since autumn. We have a voracious weasel (ermine) that seems to have eaten so many things around our place and I wonder if the grouse have fallen prey, too, or if they're just not around for some reason.

It's a beautiful shot of this Ruffed Grouse! I like how their feet are covered in feathers. I actually got some pictures of one yesterday that I will post soon. I was so excited because I don't see them all that often myself, though I know they are fairly common.

A beautiful sighting and photo, Ken. Always fascinates me that "in fall, Ruffed Grouse grow fleshy bristles (called pectinations) along the sides of their toes, which act like snowshoes to help the birds travel over snow. Pectinations are shed in spring." From www.dec.ny.gov/animals/45436.html.
