Law & Order

Law & Order
The Bannack Gallows....It is probable there never was a mining town of the same size that contained more desperadoes and lawless characters than did Bannack during the winter of 1862-63.

Construction of the Gallows was ordered by Sheriff Henry Plummer to hang convicted murderer John Peter Horan. In December 1863 a man named Red Yeager was captured and hanged by posse from Virginia City. Before Yeager was executed he reportedly confessed and implicated Sheriff Plummer as the leader of a criminal gang, known ironically as the "Innocents." Also known as road agents who robbed stages of their gold. Upon learning of Plummer's involvement the Vigilantes (a group of law abiding citizens organized to fight against crime) held a meeting in Virginia City and determined to hang Plummer and his deputies. On January 10th 1864 the Vigilantes captured their targets without a shot being fired. On that cold evening the three men were marched to their death. Plummer it was said after pleading his innocence, begged the Vigilantes to "please give me a good drop."

I was attracted to this one as soon as it appeared on my screen. So well composed and so full of atmosphere, especially so with the description.

o0o oh dear the stories of gallows and we have stories of them too :)
but in your countryside like this ... somehow it all seems so different,
having said that, ours in Coventry are "outside" of the City walls, and
on a hill where I believe they left them hanging there for all visitors
on their way to the City to see, as a deterrent. The clouds add to
the atmosphere also ... I am pleased there are no remains :) oOo

good choice of music to accompany this :)

I have not heard this track and it's great to hear 'new' songs and singers. Thank you very much for adding this to Soundtrack Weekend, Duane. The track is a great match to the shot. A fascinating description even though a bit of a gory end for the convicted! Love that sky and a fave shot.
