I believe I can shed some light on this piece of graffiti. I am a former police officer who started their career in Aberdeen city centre in the mid seventies.

One of our 'frequent flyers was a gentleman called W(V)told Ostrovich or Ostrovo. Witold was a Polish ex serviceman who served with the Polish parachute regiment at the battle of Monte Cassino. However, after being demobbed Witold somehow ended up in Aberdeen where he became homeless for most for over thirty years and with a long history of petty crime and drunkenness.

In retrospect and reflection, I'm no longer a nineteen year old police officer but a sixty year old having studied both psychology and social work would suggest that Witold probably suffered from PTSD as a result of his military service. On one occasion I had a casual conversation with Witold after yet another arrest and he described his wartime experiences and the guilt he felt at his surviving and his friends perishing (survivor guilt).

I hope this puts flesh to one of the names.
