Hermit

Hermit
Unlike other crabs, Hermit crabs have soft abdomens which they protect by inhabiting the empty shells of other sea creatures. When threatened, they can retract completely into the shell. As they grow they must abandon their current shell for a larger one. The shell of this individual is about 1cm long.

Photographed in Guanacaste, Costa Rica | January 2011.
