I spent a couple of days at the end of last week on the Lake District with my (our!) son. It looks very placid here as we dropped down from the summit of Dodd (1612ft/491m) on a well-prepared Forestry Commission path. But fast-forward an hour and we would be making the decision to turn round and head back down from the summit of Carl Side (2447ft/746m) in a fierce blizzard rather than head on to Skiddaw as we had planned, since there was nowhere to hunker down and sit it out.
