Hot and cold

Hot and cold
An extensive lava field north of Borgarnes through which Route 54 passes on its way to the distant Snæfellsjökull. This magnificent glacier-covered stratovolcano (1446m/4744ft) dominates the views from miles away.

(Ex-)Flickr contacts will probably remember that in June last year, my daughter and I had a holiday in Iceland. We only had 8 days in Iceland itself (plus late-night /early-morning flights) since we had to fit it into the half-term holiday at the end of May/begining of June as she's a teacher.

So it was a bit of a whizz since the places that I definitely wanted to visit were scattered throughout the island. We had to miss some things out, primarily the (north) western and eastern fjords and Reykjavik.

We organised it ourselves trying to use the cheapest b&b's that had good reviews and hired a little car rather than a 4x4 since I have no experience of off-roading - and Iceland is serious off-roading territory. It was a bit frantic at times but totally fantastic. If you're considering it - then do it, you won't be disappointed.

If you would like to see more from the trip, I have a set (29 shots + few more in the comments) on Flickr. I'm odell_rd there too in case this link doesn't work.

A terrific contrast in colours Roy .. and a stunning view ... if the present Global Warming trend continues, most glaciers on Iceland will have melted away within 500 years. Unlike the Arctic Ice melt, where this ice is already in the ocean ... the melting of the the Icelandic ice will increase the ocean levels ... with Iceland, Greenland and the Antarctic ice all on land, if they melt, the rise in the oceans will be significant ... basic physics!!

Wow! What a view! That building looks pretty interesting as well. I like your title of Hot and Cold - it fits perfectly! I'm glad you had a wonderful trip with your daughter and that you fit so much in during your short stay there. It's great spending time with family members, isn't it?
