Earth day challenge #6: shorter showers
It amazes me how much water is wasted on long showers. I spent a summer many years ago backpacking in SouthEast Asia. In Indonesia I stayed in youth hostels and little 1 star guesthouses where you lived like the locals. Showers were called "mandis." When taking a mandi, you stepped into a little tile enclosure that had no running water, but a rectangular basin of cold water with a small bucket. You would dip into the tub with the bucket and pour water over yourself to get wet. Then you'd soap up, and again rinse with the bucket. You would use a couple of gallons of water and get completely clean. Showers take at least that much per minute, and the minutes go by very quickly. My earth day pledge is to take very short showers!
