Candide, Leonard Bernstein

Candide, Leonard Bernstein
For my new whimsical set, "What I'm listening to," a sort of desert island disc set, only I'm not limiting the number of recordings I can bring.

One of my former jobs was the rehearsal accompanist and pit orchestra pianist of a professional theatre. It was a fun job. In the several years I worked there, this was among the most satisfying scores to play. My top three would be 'Candide', 'A Little Night Music' and 'Pirates or Penzance'. This is a theatrical adaptation of the novel by Voltaire. Especially wicked: "Auto da Fe", in which the crowd is excitedly gathered to watch executions. The Overture is great and introduces several themes. Cunegonde's solo "Glitter and be Gay" has such clever lyrics: she is bemoaning her fate at having been forced into prostitution, yet happily reminding herself of all the baubles, trinkets and champagne she receives for her favors.
