Eddie Jefferson, Body and Soul

Eddie Jefferson, Body and Soul
For my new whimsical set, "What I'm listening to," a sort of desert island disc set, only I'm not limiting the number of recordings I can bring.

Eddie Jefferson is one of the great all time jazz vocalists. His style of singing is called "vocalese," in which lyrics are written to instrumental jazz phrases. He wrote most of the lyrics on this album. His voice is deep and rich, and the arrangement really swing hard! Any of these songs alone would be worth the price of the cd: mercy, mercy, mercy (yep, the great Cannonball Adderley tune, actually written by Joe Zawinul), filthy mcnasty, psychadelic sally, see if you can git to that. Really every piece on the album in stellar. My least favorite is "so what," but only because the original "so what" from Miles Davis's Kind of Blue is so untouchable perfect.
