Not sure why they stand on one leg, I have always thought it might be a way of controlling heat within the body but that is only a guess.

They can live high in the Andies in very cold conditions and scientists studying them found the heat or cold didn't make any difference to their posture. However, there is a theory that they share the ability to switch off half of their brain when resting with marine mammals like whales. The scientists think that swiching off part of the brain to rest or sleep results in them raising their leg. Either way its not been really established why they behave like this..
