While VOV (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie) operated in the Indian Ocean, the Dutch West Indies Company, or WIC, piled the Atlantic. In order to control trade on the important Hudson River, WIC built a settlement called New Amsterdam on an island at the river's mouth. The colony was threatened by Indians and repeatedly attacked by the British, who eventually captured it in 1664. The British changed its name to New York. The remains of the wall built by WIC to defend its colony against Indians and British are today paved over by the world's most famous street -- Wall Street. ~ Page 322 Excerpt "Sapiens - A Brief History of Human kind" ~ Yuval Noah Harari

Before 1929, successful businessmen attained a near-cult status as the ultimate arbiters of what was good for the nation: for a time after 1933, the Pecora Commission en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pecora_Commission made Wall Street public enemy number one. It also introduced the word “bankster” into the American vocabulary, two generations before it was resuscitated with the vengeance by the 2007-2009 global financial crisis. ~ Page 191
