Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia (1907-1994)

Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia (1907-1994)
His Imperial Highness Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia was born 9th November 1907 as second son of the German Crown HIH Prince Wilhelm and HIH Crown Princess Cecilie and celebrated his 11th birthday in 1918 when the revolution broke out and the Kaiser fled to the Netherlands. He was celebrating his 82nd birthday, when the Berlin Wall fell. When his father died in 1951 he succeeded him as head of the Hohenzollern Family. His elder brother had renounced to his rights and died as a soldier in 1940. He got a PhD in economy in 1931, worked at an assembly line of Ford Motor Company in the USA until 1933, travelled through Spain and Argentina and learned Spanish. In 1938 he married the daughter of the self-proclaimed Russian Tsar in Exile. Princess Kira and Prince Louis Ferdinand had seven children. The princess died in France in 1967.

In 1969 opinion polls showed a strong support for Prince Louis Ferdinand to become German Bundespräsident. He had missed another chance to become German head of state (as a monarch) in 1944, when the German resistance group around Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg tried to blow up Hitler and get rid of the whole Nazi system. Many wanted Prince Louis Ferdinand to become new German head of state.

To commemorate the centenary of his birth the German Chancellor Angela Merkel was patron of a concert in the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche in Berlin on 9th November 2007, where music composed by Prince Louis Ferdinand was performed.

A very unsual life of a very unsual man.
