Stockport town centre
Stockport in times past, with a view looking down Chestergate, taken by my dad sometime during the early 1960s. The Halifax Building Society premises on the left is now the Chestergate Tavern, and the building further along, adjacent to the line of parked cars, is now a Farmfoods store. I'm not sure what it was back then. The road on the right climbs up to St Peters Square, just around the corner at the top of the hill. In the background can be seen the cooling tower of Portwood Gas Works, a landmark for many years now long gone, and a reference point for aircraft coming in to Manchester Airport. Note the farm tractor approaching in the distance.

What a marvellous 'vintage' feeling this image conveys.
