Y5 Day 211, Rob by torch light

Y5 Day 211, Rob by torch light
July 2014 hunt 11. Kathy’s Camera Techniques : Get to know your camera. Select a function or mode on your camera that you've never (or rarely) used and take a picture (or pictures) to demonstrate its purpose and/or usefulness. Some suggestions might be: custom white balance, auto exposure bracketing, continuous shooting (sports mode), selecting an auto focus point, different flash synchronizations, etc. Explain what you did and why you did it.

I've had this idea running around in my head for about 2 weeks. I wanted to use my 'bulb' function. I'd planned to set it all up on the park at sunset/dusk so there were lovely colours behind me. Alas the weather had more winterly ideas about that !

550D on the tripod at full extension, 'manual' setting on the selection dial and shutter past seconds to bulb, self timer set to 10 second and corded release locked on, flash at the beginning, 50mm lens for a change with the cross screen filter off and in it's place my ND 8 (neutral density) filter. Lettering by a LED flash light/torch (written backwards). SOOC apart from the square crop in PicMonkey. Last and best of 7 fine tuning attempts on how many ND filters were needed. Shutter open for 17 seconds. Lens to manual focus set during the initial set up. The background is a purple sheet pegged to the inside of my garage door. It's blowing a gale outside !
I will be trying this again once we're back to better sunset weather.
This is my last # for the month. I'll make my collage tomorrow to give the rest another day to guess what the engine is.

I'm not quite sure how you managed to keep yourself in fairly good focus with a 17-second exposure, especially since I don't see the arm movement you'd have writing with the torch. Whatever...it came out great! I miss not having "bulb" on my camera.

That's the flash at the start (and the pre-focusing, 'cause the camera was further away than my cord reaches)

That's very cool, Rob! Nice explanation of what you did and how you did it too. I'm not sure I could have handled the writing backwards part!
