One of My Favorite Drives

One of My Favorite Drives
Of the many 4wheel drive trails I do in Colorado, my favorite probably is the Corkscrew Gulch, Hurricane Pass and California Pass. The scenery on this drive is incredible. You drive between the Red Mountains and see Como Lake from both the California Pass and Hurricane Pass. The road is narrow in places, but I would consider it a fairly easy trail. The people in this picture are my nephew and sister-in-law. This was their first time on the road. It is traditional, or anyway at least my tradition, the first time you go over a pass you get your picture taken with the pass sign.

thanks for looking and hope you get to see this beautiful trail sometime.

J. Michael Wilhelm,…
I would love to do some of those back roads if I get back out there again, especially in the fall. BTW did you ever make it to Crystal falls and the old mill? Mike Jones tried once but made the wrong turn(left instead of right at the y in the road), but he eventually made it.

On my last trip there in 2011 I had plotted that old mill on my Google maps and captured the geo coordinates. The damn navigation unit took me the same way as Mike's first attempts. I almost lost the truck over the side of the mountain in a muddy stretch…it was a good thing I had just engaged 4WDH…I hit the gas to straighten out the truck. Long story, you can read all about it and laugh in my Blog.

I tried again the next morning after spending the night along side the road, but that section got so rough and I was hitting bottom so I turned around.
I think the GPS was probably correct as it using I guess the longer way around to the town of Crystal.

Michael, I have been to Crystal Mill twice. Once the hardway coming from Crested Butte over Schofield Pass Road which really hairy. The other time was from Marble which is fairly easy, unless you make wrong turn. Sorry you never got there, but it is one of the top 3 most photographed places in Colorado.
