Johannis Peak / Johannisberg

Johannis Peak / Johannisberg
This mountain is misstakenly tagged as the Grossglockner itself on the Internet often, guess because it looks most beautiful and perfectly covered in perenial firn ice, and it lies at the vanishing point of the pasterze valley. In the folktale about the bowling party it got a role as a priest named Father Johannes, which is a bit puzzling as the naming in honour of the Archduke Johann was as recent as 1832. The previous name was Keeserkopf.

Actually I think it is a little odd and missrepresenting, as it looks a bit like the funicular is still going down right on the intact glacier, but it is my very best lit shot of Johannis Peak, the one not very underexposed and with no blown out areas... :)

The human being in the picture shows very nicely how small and insignificant we really are. A wonderful pic, Sonja.

In summer, when the funicular works, people can be observed walking in the valley bottom to the glacier rim. That is even better. But with the simple brutalist structure of the funicular top station from the 60's it is important a human is around, as otherwise it would make the mountain look tiny...
