Guess it is inspired by different things, european romanesque pilgrimage church art and medieval pest pillars dedicated to the virgin first, but also american totem poles, happening art as attraction in tourist season and modern bio land art made to be exposed and change in the weather.
Anyways there was a really big fat old tree with a flower bed by the parking space on the last serpentine and it died and the artist designed a busy elaborate spiral path with wee pilgrims and some stuff winding around. This mountain is a pilgrimage site since old times.
